Creating a Birthplan - A Cheat-Sheet Checklist

created at: 2009-04-19

The idea of labour and delivery can be pretty daunting, especially for us rookie mamas. Making a birth plan when you have only a fuzzy notion of what to expect can be difficult. When my Ob asked about my plan I told him I wanted a cesarean and a martini. He laughed (a little warily), but I was only half kidding. It would have been really helpful to simply fill in a detailed checklist of options with a yes, no, or ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Which is why I wish I'd discovered Just The Facts Baby's Birth Plan Generator about a year and a half ago. What you do is tick or fill in the boxes, then hit generate and print out your custom birth plan. Fancy! It won't even be written on the back of an envelope in crayon!
This is a sample bit of the Labor, Delivery & Episiotomy section:

  • I would like a squat or birth bar to aid in pushing
  • I prefer foot pedals to allow me to sit up while pushing
  • I prefer stirrups to allow me to lay back during pushing
  • I prefer my coach or doula to support my legs when pushing
  • I would like to try to deliver in a hands-and-knees position
  • I wish to be able to move and change positions throughout my labor
  • I do not want an IV unless I become dehydrated
  • Even if I am fully dilated, and assuming the baby is not in distress, I would like to wait until I feel the urge to push before beginning the pushing phase
  • I would appreciate guidance in when to push and when to stop pushing.

Of course you'll want to talk to your Ob about what's feasible for you but it really can't hurt to know what your options are.
