Nursery Garland

Pretty fabric garlands seem to be everywhere these days, from birthday parties to baby rooms. They're a great way to add a pop of colour without committing to anything too drastic. They also have a lovely celebratory feel, whether you're actually celebrating or you're just feeling like 'YAY! it's Thursday!'.

I made this garland here for Ted's room. It has a slightly heraldic thing going on, because while his room isn't themed exactly I do seem to gravitate towards things that have a castle/knight/dragon connection. 'Cause I'm a nerd.

What I used was:

  • some felt
  • 6 or so meters of double fold bias binding tape
  • a sewing machine

How I did it.

  • I cut out some heraldic type shapes from the felt then layed them out into a pattern I liked.
  • I  then stacked them up in order.

  • I popped the felt pieces one at a time between the folds of the bias binding
  • then shhhhhwipp... ran a line of stitches down the tape adding pieces of felt as I went.

That's it. One heraldic garland.

The Purl Bee has instructions for a very cute flowery garland, complete with pdf.

A funny (sort of) aside, the framed dragon puzzle on the wall was mostly done by my brother. Puzzles are a really good rehab tool for folks with brain injuries. (Seriously, if you have old ones donate them to your local rehab facility) The trouble was that at the time Elliot's sense of time and proportion were completely shot. I got up to pee at 4 am and there Elliot sat at the kitchen table, where he'd been for 8 hours working on the damn thing. So we framed his epic endeavour.
