I haven't heard the word 'gumption' in years, and just within the last week or so I've heard/read it no less than three times! It's a great word.

Kudos. It takes gumption to find your place and stick.

I grew up like that--50 miles from 'civilization'. Populations of small, Midwestern towns are dwindling at astounding rates, which means their economies are too. The few stores they might have had have long since closed. But there are die-hards who won't leave. People who can't imagine living anywhere else. Not for lack of imagination but because they love it that much. They're the ones that drive an hour or more to buy fresh fruit in the wintertime and don't think twice about the inconvenience. It's an interesting existence.

Righto. And WOW! 50 miles from shops? I guess I still think in (tiny little) England scale.

It's more of a hitting a road to go to grandma's house who no longer has baby paraphernalia for an extended visit kind of list. And as far as that canoe trip in the Amazon goes--I have relatives that live 50 miles from stores that sell diapers right here in North America.

it's a good list but,

Unless you're going on a dug-out canoe adventure in the Amazon (and well done you if you are!) then buy diapers and wipes at your destination.

Car seat's can be rented with your hire car,  but talk to the rental company about safety ratings and to make sure seats are replaced after accidents.

Teddy slept in the bassinet part of his stroller when we were away. Hotels often have cribs available so you don't have to heft one around, but there are loads of really lightweight options out there.

I'm not a big playpen fan, we don't have one at home so we wouldn't travel with one.

One thing about formula, if you are traveling internationally then check to see if your brand is available. Similac isn't available in Europe so we had to tote THREE weeks worth of the stuff. it practically took up it's own suitcase and that was just for supplementing breastfeeding!

The absolute most useful thing we took with us when schlepping around Europe with a three month old was his bouncy seat. It was familiar to him no matter where we were, and it folds up to practically nothing.
