Today, as I was scouring the internets, I came across a felt baby-toy how-to, but I wasn't exactly 'sold' on the safety aspects of the idea. (Here's a link to it; I'll let you decide.) What I DID find, however, were some clever ideas in the post's comments. One woman wrote that her daughter's favorite toy was a water bottle, sans label, filled with red lentils. The lid of the bottle was glued on tightly to prevent lentil escape-age. Not only was it a cheap and easy store-bought toy alternative, apparently, the little bugger had hours and hours of fun with it. Another suggestion, instead of the beans, was a bit of water with a splash of food coloring--also with the lid glued on tightly. Just goes to show you, sometimes you'll find the more interesting ideas in the comments!
Of course, you'll probably want to avoid using bottles with BPA in them. To check to see if your bottle contains it, check the bottom of the bottle. A BPA bottle does NOT contain the number seven in its chemical identification. So, in the example below, this bottle DOES contain BPA.

Also, some scientists don't like the 3 and 6 either. You can read more about BPA here.
