For all that our daughter, Ayla, has not been a dream sleeper (hence the not posting for 6 months), she is a champion eater. As she has moved to soilds over the last few months, life has certainly become more interesting. While Bruno is a more "oraganized/methodical/careful" feeder, I tend to plop the food down on the tray and let her have at it. This has led to some pretty big messes around the house, so we've learned to arm ourselves with an arsenal of splat mats, no-spill sippies, and bibs. Below is a list of some of our favorite amunition:
1. Black Dot Retro Splat Mat: Not only is this splat mat stylish; it's HUGE. Measuring 44"x44", it covers some serious ground and cleans up like a dream. I love the cheery polka dots and the scalloped edges. They come in a variety of colors to match every decor and sell for $24.95 at Amazon.

2.
Summer Infant Tiny Diner Placemat: The first time we took Ayla to a restaurant, we did not have this placemat, and OH, THE MESS. We were so embarrassed by the disaster Ayla created on and around the table that we spent an embarrassing amount of time cleaning the area with baby wipes. Since acquiring this placemat, dining out has become a much tidier experience. Not only does the mat protect Ayla from coming into contact with the questionable tabletop germs (maybe I'm a tad too paranoid here), but the design of the mat helps her keep most of the food on the placemat. And, miraculously, most of what slips off the mat, falls into the placemat's built in trough. It's been a lifesaver for our tiny diner. One waiter even told us that he wished every baby came into the restaurant with one of them. It sells for
$10.99 at Amazon and comes in a rainbow of colors.

3.
The Snack Trap: We received a set of Snap Trap cups as a gift, and have recently introduced them to Ayla. She is just starting to get the idea of them, reaching through the flexible lid to grab her puffs. We like the fact that most of the puffs really do seem to stay inside the cup, even when the cup is played with (e.g. tossed, rattled, turned upside down, etc.). Initially, we though we'd wait to have her try the cup when she was a bit older, because the idea seems geared more towards a toddler aged baby, but at 9-months, she's figured it out (we're applying to MIT early-decision). You can find a 3-pack of
Snack Traps at Amazon for $14.36.

4.
Boon Spoon: This strange little spoon has been
written about before on the site, and with good reason. It's a brilliant utensil. We use it every time Ayla eats on the go. You simply "load" the baby food into the spoon's handle, screw on the spoon, add the cap, and toss it in the diaper bag. The spoon allows you to dispense just the right amount of food as you feed your little one, making mobile mealtime minimally messy. The Boon Spoon sells at
Amazon for $6.99.
