Sitting Pretty: The Bumbo Seat

created at: 2009-04-29Our little lady has recently entered the sitting up phase. We discovered this by watching her repeatedly try to do sit-ups while laying on her back. She wants to be upright so much that she heaves her heavy little head off the ground in an effort to pull herself up. While this is entertaining to watch, it's also a bit frustrating for her. So, we've started to prop her up in a sitting position using our laps, the Boppy, and just about everything else we can think of; including wedging her little body into the corner of the sofa.

While visiting a friend last week, she asked if Ayla had a Bumbo. "A what?" I replied. She then showed me a nifty little chair that helps infants learn to sit up, all the while promoting good posture. Ayla seemed to enjoy it, so we ordered one, and she LOVES it.

The Bumbo seat is designed for babies who have good head control, so depending on your baby's development, you can start using it around the 3-4 month mark. It helps wee ones develop the trunk control they need to sit up on their own. It is recommended by pediatricians, orthopedists, and physical therapists. In fact, some states even recognize it as a medical device!

The seats come in several different colors: pink, lilac, aqua, yellow, and our favorite - lime green! They range in price from about $35 - $40. The best deal can be found at ActiveForever.com, where they sell for $34.49 (plus shipping and handling).
