Glass (Bottle) Half Full

Earlier this year when the risk of the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) was found in several plastic drinking receptacles, Bruno and I threw out our Nalgenes and bought a Sigg. Now that it's time to begin thinking about what type of bottle we'll use with our baby, we've decided to go glass - just like my own mama did. BPA is a nasty chemical that has been linked to cancers, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes and more. There are companies out there who are producing plastic bottles that are BPA-free, and we may turn to them eventually, but as a bright-eyed, first time parent duo we are going to go glass until we break all of them.

Despite the fact that these bottles may be prone to breaking, they are in demand, so if you find one you like, order it. We recently purchased a set of Born Free 9oz. glass bottles with the company's signature venting system. Apparently, these glass bottles are so in demand that the Born Free company has had to limit the triple packs to one venting system. The good news is, each pack contains a coupon for two free venting systems that are a piece of cake to order through their web-site. Another great feature is that these bottles are supposed to be particularly ideal for breastfed babies who are transitioning to bottles. We ordered our set from Amazon.com for the discounted price of $26.30 (reg. price $32.99). We plan to order another set or two, and would like to get the 5oz. size to suit the smaller portions the baby will need early on.

In addition to the Born Free models, there are many other glass options out there that we're excited to try. There are a wide variety of styles and prices. Two of our favorites are listed below:

1. Wee-Go Glass Bottle by Babylife. These may be the best looking bottles man has made. The 9oz. glass bottle is covered with a silicone sleeve that protects the bottle from breaking. The silicone sleeve is free of plastics and is 100% non-toxic. It also provides a good gripping surface during feeding and a nifty tactile experience for your baby! The bottle and sleeve can be boiled or put in the dishwasher together. The silicone nipple is latex-free and non-toxic. Just about every component of the bottle is FDA approved and recyclable. The only draw-back is that these bottles are on the spendy side. The best price we've found is $17.95 from Chualamama.com (other sites list them for $18.00).

2. Momo Baby Glass Bottles. These bottles come in 5 and 8oz. sizes and three different colors: yellow, green and blue. Each bottle features a pair of unpretentious happy apples. The bottles share many of the same features as the Born Free and WeeGo models. Amazon sells their 3 pack for a steal: $13.99 for the 5oz. size and $14.99 for the 8oz.
