Pre-Fab Play?

created at: 2009-03-20

It seems that even Milan Design Week is frantically working the baby/kids market this year.  Grown up designers trying to emulate the creativity of kids just doesn't seem right.  Please excuse me while I proselytize...

Kids' creativity and imagination is sacred ground, in my opinion. I'm from the school of thought that PLAY is a child's work. Adults tend to short circuit their own kids creative process and age appropriate ability when they spoon feed them a creative idea, but at the same time do most of the work for them. My advice is NEVER EVER rob your kids of the chance to create something by themselves, no matter how pitiful it may seem to the competitive eye of a parent. Instead, provide materials, ask questions to get them thinking and talking about their creation and only help when asked. Their feeling of accomplishment is like money in their little self-esteem bank account.

I'm neutral on the product. I don't think any kid appreciates the cost of something like this. A free box is just as meaningful--and it's recycled.

So you're not happy with the product above -- or you are? I assume the former. Seems pretty clever to me. Creativity can be what happens with the product - not just the construction of the product. Though I wonder what the cost of this glorified fridge box is?

But I hear you. Personally I prefer the fridge box path too. Often parents want quick fixes and those that are able pay for that quick fix. But even when you pay for something you find the kid likes the box that that toy - or whatever - came in better than the toy or whatever it is!
